LUFC Leeds v Liverpool Preview

Leeds United entertain old foes Liverpool in a mouth watering Carling Cup Third Round tie on Tuesday night in front of the live Sky TV cameras..

Carling Cup form

Leeds

Leeds have so far beaten Darlington 1-0 away, and Watford 2-1 at home after extra time in the competition.

Last season they went out at the fourth round stage 2-1 at Derby County.

Liverpool

Liverpool enter the competition at the third round stage due to their involvement in Europe.

Last season they went out in the fifth round losing 4-2 at Spurs.

History

The two clubs have played each other 108 times in all competitions.

54 of those have come at Elland Road with Leeds winning 18, Liverpool 21 and 15 being drawn.

They have met eleven times in all cup competition`s including one infamous meeting in the Charity Shield which will be remembered for Kevin Keegan and Billy Bremner both throwing their shirts to the ground after being shown red cards.
Liverpool eventually won the game 6-5 on penalties after the game finished 1-1.

They had another classic meeting in the Charity Shield in 1992, for all the right reasons when Leeds won 4-3.

Of the eleven meetings Liverpool and ended victorious on six occasions to Leeds two with three games going to replays.

They also met in the 1965 FA Cup final when Ian St John scored the winner for Liverpool in extra time in a 2-1 victory.

They have only ever been drawn against each other in the League Cup once, in the 1972/73 season Liverpool won a replay at Elland Road 1-0 after the sides had drawn 2-2 at Anfield.

The last time they met was in Leeds relegation season at Elland Road in 2003/04, when they drew 2-2.

List of clashes in cup competitions between the two sides.

Prediction

I expect Liverpool to make quite a few changes, Leeds will give them a cracking game and expect a draw at the end of normal time.

Who knows what will happen in the extra 30 minutes?

Leeds United 2-2 Liverpool

I am more interested in the league but we need to do ourselves justice on the wider TV. We have no great expectation so lets just go for it and enjoy it.

What we need is a confidence boosting performance and no injuries. The score is secondary. Saturday is too important.
