LUFC West Brom put in bid for Beckford

According to reports on BBC Radio Leeds, West Bromwich Albion have put in a 'substantial` bid for Leeds star striker Jermaine Beckford.

The bid was also mentioned on BBC WM with the Midlands club reportedly offering around 2 million for last seasons 34 goal leading scorer.

Beckford who only has one year left on his contract at Elland Road was put on the transfer list by the club earlier in the summer after he turned down the offer of a new deal.

Leeds decided to take him off the transfer list a few weeks ago and boss Simon Grayson said he was willing to take the gamble of losing his star striker on a free at the end of the season.

On Tuesday SkyBet cut their odds on Beckford joining West Brom from 20/1 to 11/4.

After losing star midfielder Fabian Delph yesterday Leeds fans will be desperate to not see Beckford leave as well just days before the new season.

Now I really am worried, surely we can't sell both Delph and Beckford the week before the season starts? Ken Bates better get ready for some s**t coming his way on Saturday if we do!
Need him to stay now. To late to be chopping and changing. Leeds need to get him signed up on a 3 year contract and maybe put in a clause which allows him the option to leave after this season, if we don't go up!
Leeds can't "make" Beckford do anything. He has a year left, and he (or, more likely, his agent) can sit out the next 12 months and walk away on a free, if he wants. So, Leeds could refuse WBA's bid - and risk having a sulking Beckford (and we all know how good he is at that) disrupting the team. Or not playing at all. Or they could cash in. 2m is a lot for a L1 player with no higher level experience - although given the way West Brom play, I could see him scoring quite a few goals for them. Ultimately it's down to Beckford. If he WANTS to stay and help us get promotion, he'll be a hug asset - it's hard to see him failing to get another 25-30 goals next season for us. If he DOESN'T want to stay ..... which option do you prefer ......?
Last season Bates described a 1 million bid for him as petty cash! Surely he wouldn't accept a bid thats only double that?...Im not too worried about this one to be honest...I think Grayson knows best!
I think the tellling action is that he, like Delph, was 'pulled' out of the Burnley game. If we had no intention of selling would we do that ??. Lets be serious about this and realise that if Beckford wants to go there is little point in keeping him. Pre season becomes a joke when two integral players who have played almost every match leave the week the season starts.
If Beckford goes then I hope we see Billy Sharp coming in before the weeks over. I have to agree Yorkshireman, If he doesn't get his own way we all know what he can be like. Saying that even when he was sulking last season he continued to find the net.
2mil is nothing compared to gettin promoted, i dont think we'll accept that!
Interesting that the Birmingham Mail is now reporting that West Brom have denied making a bid. At the same time, another site ( has a headline about Leeds fans wanting Bates out. We're all very quick to jump on Bates' back .... but could it be that this is just a bit of media mischief-making, just a few days before we start our season ......? Time will tell.
If its true and we don't bring anyone in this week I expect Bates getting a lot of stick on Saturday.
Yorkshrman-I think your notion concerning Media mischief-making is close to the mark. The media (the majority of who have no love for our club) realise that this could (and should) be the year we finally get out of League One.. They`re just trying to stir things up a little..
Rotherham White
if he does go i would probably cry. Apparently, wolves have put a bid in too
If a team does come in with a bid of 2m or more, I think the conversation between SG & Mr Bates would be interesting.
