LUFC Rui wants starting place

Rui Marques is the latest Leeds player to say he`s looking forward to battling for a starting place this season.

Shane Higgs and Casper Ankergren are ready to do battle for the number 1 jersey and Rui has stiff competition for a starting place in the centre of defence.

Marques formed a good partnership with new signing Patrick Kisnorbo on Saturday against Blackburn, Speaking in the YEP he said 'It's always my aim to be part of the team, not to be on the bench. I find it hard to be happy when I don't get the chance to play and it's a good feeling to have a match like that behind me."

With Leeds skipper Richard Naylor to miss the start of the season whilst he still recovers from his back operation four players are fighting it out for the two central defensive spots.

Lubomir Michalik, Paul Huntington, Patrick Kisnorbo and Rui will all be aiming for a starting place on the opening day of the season against Exeter City.

With only two first team friendlies left at Newcastle United and Burnley time is running out for the quartet to impress boss Simon Grayson.

Its great that there is so much competition all over the pitch, nobody can afford to take their foot of the gas.

That was one thing that seemed lacking under Macca and Wise...Rui will find it tough to gain a first team place if the others are fit but at least he will be pushing them all the way...

IF HE PLAYS LIKE HE DID ON SATURDAY HE WILL TAKE SOME SHIFTING. HE PLAYED AS WELL AS I HAVE SEEN HIM.
