Bates wants substantial cash for Garbutt

Ken Bates is far from happy after another one of Leeds academy players has been snapped up by a Premiership club.

16 year old Luke Garbutt joined Everton this week despite being offered the chance of a scholarship and professional contract at Elland Road.

Garbutt is a product of the Leeds United academy and is the third player in recent years to be to snapped up by Premiership clubs after Martin Woods and Tom Taiwo joined Chelsea in 2006.

Taiwo has recently signed for Carlisle on a season long loan and could line up against United this season.

Chelsea also tried to snap up Danny Rose who at the time who decided to stay at Elland Road.

Leeds eventually won compensation for Woods and Taiwo from Chelsea totalling 5 million.

Speaking on Yorkshire Radio Bates said, 'We're chasing matter with the Football League and the Premier League and we're seeking substantial compensation."

Garbutt is being talked about has been an exceptional player for the future, we have spent time and money on the lad bringing him through the academy only for a Premiership club to come along and steel him. Its about time a rule was brought in that if you are at a clubs academy unless they are released they must stay with them until they are at least 20.

Several CCC and League 1&2 clubs have tried to bring in such a rule but the FA and FL are so far up the top clubs ar*es that it is always blocked. The only club with a productive academy among the top 4 is Arsenal and a lot of theirs are foreign kids who come across at an early age. ManU steal kids from other academies and Chelsea and Liverpool hardly bother these days. The league brought in arule that kids had to 'live' within a certain distance of their clubs but the big 4 soon found a way round that by moving whole families or the kids living with relatives who were closer. At 1m to 2m these kids are no real risk to the big clubs who can pay 100k a week to their players.

At least he is showing that he cares whether its fake or not...We only got 300,000 for him apparently and I would be hoping for 5 times that!

To be honest we have only recently gotten into the trend of taking youngsters from other sides. We already have an excellent academy and haven't really done it in the past. I'm sure you'll get your deserves for Garbutt, but to say he's worth 5x300k is a bit wrong. Everton believe they have done nothing wrong and I don't think they have. 300k for a 16 year old who hasn't played professionally and is just a prospect is about right. Maybe there should be rules introduced to make sure you prosper if he does fulfill the potential you have helped to nurture, ie incentive payments on appearances etc.
