LUFC Season review - September

LUFC Season review - September

Leeds United went into the month of September after a poor August which saw them win only one League game from their first four.

They started the month in sizzling fashion putting five past Crewe Alexandra at Elland Road.

The players seemed intent on having a goal of the season completion in this game.
Firstly Fabian Delph scored from 25 yards, this was quickly followed by another long range goal from Alan Sheehan.

Jonathan Douglas continued the trend early in the second half when he scored from around 30 yards, Jermaine Beckford added a fourth with a header before Andy Robinson scored another scintillating goal when he cut in from the left and from a tight angle gave the Crewe keeper no chance.

The score line was given something of a false look when in the last minute firstly Leeds defender Michalik was sent off, from the resulting free kick Bopp scored for the visitors.
There was still time for Crewe to score another to end the game with a 5-2 victory for Leeds.

Next up came a trip to Swindon Town, things looked bad for Leeds in the first ten minutes when Alan Sheehan was sent off for an unnecessary two footed tackle.

This seemed to galvanise the team and after a few missed chances Jermaine Beckford fired Leeds into the lead halfway through the half.

After dominating the half with ten men Leeds fell to a sucker punch on the stroke of half time. Simon Cox gave David Lucas no chance with a volley from close range to send the teams in level.

Leeds were soon back in the lead early in the second half largely thanks to Phil Smith in the Swindon goal.

A long range free kick from Neil Kilkenny should have been easily dealt with by Smith but he somehow allowed the ball to go through his body and over the line.

David Lucas was having a quiet game in the Leeds goal but produced two fantastic saves to keep Leeds in the lead.

Leeds guaranteed all three points late on when Fabian Delph, who was quickly earning a great reputation set up Beckford with a pinpoint pass, the striker gave Smith no chance and reached ten goals for the season in only the first week of September.

The Whites were on their travels again the following Saturday, this time against last seasons Play off semi final opponents Carlisle United.

The Cumbrian`s had once again started the season well but Leeds took all three points thanks to goals from Beckford and Becchio who were quickly producing a formidable partnership.

Leeds were back in Carling Cup action in midweek, this time against fellow League One side Hartlepool United at Elland Road.

In a hard fought contest Leeds twice had to come from behind thanks to goals from Robert Snodgrass and Enoch Showunmi to see the game going into injury time level at 2-2.

Andy Robinson who was quickly becoming a fans favourite ensured the game didn`t go to extra time when his shot from a very acute angle looped over the keepers head to send Leeds into the fourth round.

The victory earned Leeds a trip to Championship side Derby County when the draw was made.

Leeds finished the month with a hard earned victory over strugglers Hereford United, after dominating throughout the game that man Andy Robinson once again ensured victory with the only goal of the game inside the last twenty minutes.

An excellent month for Leeds which saw them win all five games they played in all competitions.

As a result they had climbed to third in the table just a point behind Oldham Athletic and Scunthorpe United.

The review of October will follow next week when the defensive frailties and poor away form which was to trouble Leeds for most of the season started to surface.
