LUFC - Bates disappointed with Beckford

Ken Bates has expressed his disappointment in striker Jermaine Beckford turning down the offer of a new contract.

Leeds offered the leading goalscorer for the last two seasons a new three year contract which Beckford turned down.

Speaking on Yorkshire Radio Bates said 'Money isn't everything in life and Jermaine may want to consider how happy he would be away from Yorkshire, but that's his decision.'

With Beckford only having twelve months left on his current contract they decided to put on the transfer list now rather than the chance of losing him for nothing at the end of next season.

A number of clubs have already been linked with the striker and Bates says the club will not sell him unless the right offer for the club comes along.

It would appear the feeling is mutual or Becks would have accepted the deal !!!!

With first Douglas and now it looks like Beckford leaving because of wages I don't think we can expect any good quality players to replace them. We need the scout out again who found Becchio!!
dazza71
Maybe Becks doesn`t warrant much of a payrise. Where was he in the playoff semi final when we needed him most? You reward someone who turns up at big games and strikes a decent penalty when the pressure`s on. He was reportedly one of the biggest earners at ER anyway. We could get a better striker for the money we`re paying Jermaine. Next season What shirt will he be wearin` bruv...?

Without his goals would we have reached the playoffs

Without his goals but with a decent defence for the first 30 games of the season we would. Get the defence in place and we shouldn't have to worry about someone who needs to score that many goals.

I wonder how much it would cost to persuade Swansea to part with Jason Scotland....? ....if he would move...

I think he would cost more in wages and transfer fee than Beckford.
dazza71
I'm sure you're right. But we can't afford another year in League 1. Let's hope we can get Sodje, keep Naylor healthy and get a solid replacement for Beckford. Snodgrass and Becchio may have scored 30 goals between them, but they scored a good proportion of them because of the attention given to Beckford by opposing defenders.
