LUFC - Leeds 2008 review January - March

LUFC - Leeds 2008 review January - March

With the soap opera that is Leeds United; following the club never has a dull moment so I thought it would be a good time to have a look back at 2008.

I will firstly cover January to March.

January
Having been deducted 15 points at the start of the season Leeds had managed to clear the point`s deduction and were in with a serious chance of automatic promotion as 2008 started, they were in third place just six points behind Swansea City.
The year didn`t start well though with Leeds losing at home on New Years Day against Oldham Athletic 3-1, Leeds first home defeat of the season.

The transfer window opened and Leeds made their first signing when Finnish winger Sebastian Sorsa (can anyone remember him?) signed for the club.
Leeds second recruit was announced soon after when Aussie international Neil Kilkenny signed from Birmingham City.
The club quickly added a third player in the first week of the window being open when signing another midfielder Peter Sweeney from Stoke City.

Leeds were back on the pitch and made up for a poor performance on New Years Day easily beating Northampton 3-0 at Elland Road with new signing Neil Kilkenny having an excellent debut.

Leeds withdrew their offer for Luton Town forward Dean Morgan after the Hatters player thought he was worth more money than Leeds were offering, where is he now?

Leeds were going midfielder crazy when signing their fourth new midfielder in the opening eight days of the transfer window, this time bringing in Bradley Johnson from Northampton Town.
They soon added defender Darren Kenton to the ranks when he joined from Leicester City.

Probably the best signing of the month was the first professional contract that was signed by rising star Fabian Delph who signed a two and a half year deal.

Jermaine Beckford scores the only goal in a televised clash at Crewe. Beckford had been the talk of many rumours during the transfer window but after the game showed his commitment to Leeds when asked if he was going to leave saying "What shirt am I wearing, bruv? You bein' serious?'

Leeds lost their second home game out of the last three when losing to Yorkshire rivals Doncaster Rovers.

Shaun Derry leaves Leeds and joins Crystal Palace after a loan period with the Londoners.
Leeds falter again when conceding a late equaliser at Luton Town.

Manager Dennis Wise leaves Leeds United to do some sort of mystery job at Newcastle United, does anyone still know what he does?
Gwyn Williams takes temporary charge for the midweek game at Southend, once again Leeds drop points when beaten 1-0, the result sees Leeds finish the month in sixth place but still only three points from the automatic promotion spot.

Defender Alan Sheehan joins on loan from Leicester City.
Ex Leeds favourite Gary McAllister becomes the new manager of Leeds and finishes off the transfer window bringing in Lubo Michalik from Bolton and Anthony Elding from Stockport County.

February

McAllister`s reign starts with a 2-0 home defeat against Tranmere Rovers.

The new boss makes his first appointment bringing in ex Republic of Ireland manager Steve Staunton as his assistant manager, he also brings in ex Carlisle boss Neil McDonald as his first team coach.
Leeds continue to drop points in February and have a succession of draws against Northampton, Nottingham Forest and Crewe Alexandra, those run of results have seen Leeds drop down to ninth, five points behind the play off spots.

One game was called off this month much to the disgust of many Leeds fans (me included) I had made a 200 mile trip and set off at 6.30am before finding out that the lunch time local derby against Doncaster Rovers had been called off because of a frozen pitch.

Leeds announced a new four year kit sponsorship with Italian leisure wear company Macron.
Alan Thompson joins Hartlepool United on a month`s loan.

Leeds are still waiting for the football league to respond to the writ that Ken Bates served them earlier in the week for the 15 point penalty they gave them at the start of the season.
The club agree 'under protest` to an arbitration hearing regarding the 15 point penalty.

March
Leeds sign Aston Villa defender Steve O`Halloran on loan but he`s injured in the warm up at Swindon and returns to his parent club without making an appearance.

Gary McAllister finally secures his first victory as united boss in his fifth game; a Tresor Kandol gives them a 1-0 victory at Swindon Town.

Jermaine Beckford is announced as the FourFour Two League One player of the season.

The Whites secure back to back wins when beating Bournemouth 2-0 at Elland Road, they are soon brought back down to earth though when Cheltenham Town complete the double over Leeds with a 2-1 victory.

Leeds let four players go out on loan, Matt Heath joins Colchester, Ian Westlake joins Brighton, Leon Constantine joins Oldham and Curtis Weston joins Scunthorpe United.

United bring in veteran striker Dougie Freedman in on loan from Crystal Palace to hopefully revive Leeds faltering promotion challenge, he makes an instant impact scoring twice at Port Vale but Leeds let all three points slip when Vale score a last minute equaliser.

Goalkeeper Casper Ankergren is charged by the football league for allegedly throwing something at the Swindon fans after the victory earlier in the month.

Leeds win a crucial play off place clash against Walsall live on Sky TV 2-0, Jermaine Beckford scores both goals.

Defender Ben Parker joins Darlington on loan for the rest of the season.

Leeds drop more points when they can only draw 0-0 with Brighton at Elland Road, that result sees them finish the month in eighth place, four points outside the play offs.

Look out for April to June tomorrow.
