Leeds Captain Thompson Retires

Leeds United club captain Alan Thompson has announced that he is retiring from football aged just 34.

Having started his career with Newcastle United in 1991, Thommo moved on to Bolton, Aston Villa, Celtic, Leeds, and a loan spell late on with Hartlepool United.

Dennis Wise made Thompson club captain this season, having joined the Whites in January 2007. This season he has struggled with injuries, however made the bench in the last regular game of the season.

It now appears than rather moving on to pastures new, the England capped playmaker is calling it a day:

“I've had a good career, but I've decided to call it a day,” Alan told Leedsunited.com.

“The high point was playing for England, but I've got plenty of good memories.

“I'm going to take a bit of time out now, but I would like to stay involved in the game.”

Going on to mention his time at Leeds United, he added:

“It's been enjoyable. I had hoped to have played more of a part, and it was disappointing to finish on a low at Wembley on Sunday.”
