Luton Town Set to Pay the 'Leeds United Penalty?'

Luton Town Set to Pay the 'Leeds United Penalty?'

Luton Town may start next season’s League Two campaign on -15 points, having failed to come out of administration with a CVA in place.

The penalty imposed on the Hatters would be the same vicious handicap slapped on Leeds United as they started their League One season without an agreement to pay back creditors in place.

It was reported in the media earlier on Wednesday that this had been confirmed, however a statement on the official Luton Town website read:

“It has been reported by certain media that Luton Town Football Club will start next season having received a 15 point deduction.

Neither Luton Town Football Club nor LTFC 2020 Ltd, the company in the process of acquiring Luton Town, have received any official confirmation of this situation from the Football League.

LTFC 2020 Ltd are currently in discussion with the Football League and do not expect to know the outcome until early next month, at which point the factual situation will be publicised.”

The Football League set a dangerous precedence in giving Leeds United a 15 point deduction at the start of the season, and I can honestly say that to an extent, I am disappointed that we weren’t the only ones to fall foul. If there was anything to learn from the saga, it was that clubs that are not attempting any kind of underhand tactics do not deserve to lose 15 points for the following season, as in this example, possibly threatening the League future of Luton Town.

Good luck Luton!
