Leeds Striker Retires: Reaction

As Tore-Andre Flo bows out of football, Ken Bates hails ‘a true gentleman both on and off the field’ and Gary McAllister talks of his admiration of the former Norwegian international.

The breaking news on Tuesday evening was that the 34-year-old former Chelsea forward was retiring following an irregular period of first team appearances. Chairman Ken Bates, who was at Chelsea when Flo arrived at the London club, was quick to praise the big man as he told leedsunited.com:

“Tore is a true gentleman both on and off the field. He has always been a model professional. He signed for me at Chelsea as a kid and came to Leeds in our hour of need.

“My personal thanks go to him. He has been a great player throughout his career and I would like to wish him all the best for the future.”

Manager Gary McAllister, who may or may not have had a say in Flo’s decision to retire as first-team chances became limited was equally as complimentary:

“He has been a fantastic player who has played at the very highest level. He's won championships, European cups, and I've so much admiration for the guy. I wish him all the best in the future and he will always be welcome in the future at Leeds United.”

Chelsea forward. What is your fascination with Chelsea all about? Bates, Wise, Flo? I'd always thought there was a bit of bad blood betwen you and Chelsea.
